a) Introduction
(Explanation of Urbanization theory Quotes from core class textbook)
According to G.Tyler(1994),poverty is “becoming urbanized as more poor people migration from rural to urban areas. At least 1 billion people -18% of the world’s population-live in the crowded slums of inner cities and in the vast,
mostly illegal squatter settlements or shantytowns that ring the outskirts of most cities in LDCs(Less Developed Country).Despite being centers of commerce and industry, many cities suffer from extreme poverty and social and environment. Based on his explanation , I will mention about the problem of slum clearance in Mumbai, India.
b) Background information
I am interested in poor people in urban area. I believe everyone has the rights to live even it is slum. India government has done Slum clearance since the Slum clearance Act was passed the Mumbai city. Some private organizations provide health care program and family planning. In this article, I will introduce one activity for maternal and child healthcare for people in India.
c) Why is this issue important?
I try to figure out the influence of the act to the slum clearance in that area.
It is also an ethical issue because people have the right to live in general. So, the real problem is laid between the human rights and the government policy. India
government has a vision to develop like Singapore. In the name of beautification government did a lot of slum clearance. Unfortunately, poor people are regarded a part of bad environment. India Government has to face with the root of problem and provide some policy. To save poor people we should focus on one person who is involved in serious conditions. I think social service and education are very important to fulfill the needs of such people.
